  • Fangio upset about Special Teams

I guess they were kinda weak this pre-season.

Maybe the price you pay for having a deep roster is that not enough guys embrace special teams play.

Vic Fangio Fires Shot Across the Bow of Special Teams Coach Tom McMahon
Fangio is tired of special teams being the weak link.

By CHAD JENSEN 6 HOURS AGO

You've heard the old maxim "a team is only as strong as its weakest link." If that's true, all the improvements the Denver Broncos have made on defense and offense could be for naught due to the continued foibles of the special teams.

After a rough showing in the first two preseason games, the Broncos' third-phase turned in another stinker in the finale on Saturday night vs. the Los Angeles Rams. The Broncos' specialists haven't been the culprits to these breakdowns, but rather, the coverage units.

Head coach Vic Fangio appears to be losing his patience with the continued erratic execution of the third phase. Following the Broncos' 17-12 win over the Rams, Fangio put his team's depth players on notice as he detailed Denver's third-phase foibles.

“I didn't like the kickoff return early which—the first field goal they scored on, the big plays were the kickoff return," Fangio said on Saturday. "We got a facemask penalty and then they hit a straight on us for a good chunk which was a good play on their part. Giving them the ball wherever it was, that was too much."

The veteran coach didn't leave it there, punctuating his remarks on the matter by firing a shot of sorts across the bow of special teams coordinator Tom McMahon.

"We've got to make it better," Fangio continued. "We've got to find the players that we keep to cover kicks better, and if not, we need to find players who will be. Obviously, we need to do a good job of coaching it.”

Weird tenure for Mcmahon. I believe he was highly regarded when he came to Denver.

A meeting of the small council has taken place and it has been determined that my election bet with 69bronco (leave the OM for a year) will be transferred and recognized on this new forum.

Tom McMahon tried to turn Marquette King and his monster leg into a directional punter. He probably should have been replaced this year.

STs always seem to have issues in Denver no matter the coach.

it’s nauseating to watch visiting punters show Denver punters how to take advantage of thin air.

Turn back the clocks a few years and the right move would have been to not trade Riley Dixon and forgo signing Marquette King.

Our punter was decent last year, right? I wonder if it's just the turnover since 15. No depth. I mean, I guess you can fire Mcmahon, but you're right it seems to never be good so I'm not sure if its the coach or something else.

No, he already found someone else to blame.

                                  Back to the OP.

I don't think our ST is total trash, I really think we are just a couple pieces away. Our returns were actually pretty decent, and we faced a couple good returners and the best preseason punting performance I've ever seen in my life.

Go back and watch the good (opposing) returns from the Seahawks game - the holding by Seattle was atrocious. I mean, Josh Watson was hugged from behind like he was being prison raped and he was the closest guy to making the tackle. Some really terrible holding penalties were missed in that game. Boone was also supposed to help us here, and he's been out.

My main issue isn't giving up a 30 yard return, its us also getting good kick returns ourselves and not starting drives inside our own 10. I think that has been our failure over the past several years. Poor field position + 3 and outs have been our doom.

I think this ST unit will get better if we stay healthy.

In 2020 our punt return coverage was middle-of-the-pack. But our kickoff coverage was 31st out of 32, giving up an average of 29.86 yds per attempt, including a 102 yd TD.

Do you think the depth on this roster might equate to lotsa guys thinking they're "above" special teams?

Seems like LOTS of our backups have "could be the starter" written all over them.

                                            Nope.

What I think is that last year they had some excuses. The injury list was epic and ongoing from start to finish. As a result of that, the backups who would normally play ST were frequently forced into starting positions and I have to think that this occupied most of their concentration and game day prep. And, of course, some of those who were "promoted" from ST had their roles filled by guys from the practice squad or new signees who probably lacked the same cohesion even if the talent was roughly comparable.

This preseason, though, is like every preseason. Many of these guys know, going in, that their chances of making the 53-man cut (or even the practice squad) are directly dependent on their ST performances. And I think the majority of starting spots were already settled, especially on defense. The exception is probably the secondary, but I think the bigger problem in coverage has been whiffing on the part of LBs, RBs and gunners (usually WRs).
