Wow. My respect for Will Smith just went down to zero. Was he on something? A guy with a sense of humor like Smith can usually take a joke. I didn't know he was so insecure.
My wife likes to watch these things so I watched a bit of it. I think the comics tried to do the Ricky Gervais thing but they came off as just being mean and not funny. Some of it came across as being very rude to some of the actors/actresses IMO. They even made K. Durst move out of her seat calling her just a generic seat sitter after she had just failed to win he Best actress award she was nominated for. It was kind of awkward, just trying to be mean to people (seems to be characteristic of the woke left nowadays).
Just hire Ricky Gervais next time for the Oscars, the Emmys, etc , all of it. Pay whatever the man wants.
Then you had a bunch of dancers in front of the screen during the In Memorium segment, blocking the "remembrance" screen of the dead people while they did some kind of show tune and a dance wrapped with some mangled gospel tune. Pretty much total disrespect of the dead. Bill Murray suddenly appears giving a disjointed, awkward speech about Reitman while these jokers are still swaying and singing behind him like it's Mardi Gras, or something. Then, Jamie Lee Curtis comes out holding a squirming puppy and tries to do a eulogy for Betty White over the music and dancers behind her (who are half covering the screen shot of White's face)? WTF?
At the beginning, they say "Our music" will be supplied by some DJ up in the balcony. WTF? Then, later they say, here's a four piece band providing "Our music," then, two thirds of a the way through the show, they have a camera go under the stage and show an orchestra, looking like passengers on a slave galley, hidden under the stage, and THEY are providing "Our music." WTF?
Amy Shumer hanging from wires in a Spiderman suit spewing Silly String. Then, you have Jessica Chastain talking about the dangers of the world we face and all the troubles going on and how, "At times like these, I think about Tammy Fae Baker..." I mean, WTF? A lot of weird shit going on. Then, they say they're going to do a "moment of silence" for Ukraine which lasts 30 seconds.
Will Smith's acceptance speech was more of a nervous breakdown. Gibberish. It got so weird, and so many substances were pouring out of Smith's face, that the director twice put the Oscars logo up to block him out, then caught Venus and Serena way up in the audience, watching Smith's melt-down, and looking all WTF? Then, Anthony Hopkins comes out says, "Yeah. What Will said. Peace and love." WTF?
Felt to me like a bunch of highly medicated crazy people brought down from their rooms and gathered in a hall to give each other trophies. If you've ever seen the old movie, King of Hearts, this was a remake. Hollywood is disappearing before our eyes. Irrelevant.
The only thing worth a damn was Billie Eilish doing the James Bond song. Even that James Bond bit was crap, with such a bunch of fast flash cuts that you could have had a seizure. The pictures went by so fast it was impossible to register. And what's with P. Diddy announcing some bit about the Godfather's 50th? What the **** does he have to do with it? They couldn't bring in James Caan, or Duvall, or pretty much anybody else? Then, Al Pacino and DeNiro come out and aren't allowed a word, just standing there like a couple of vases?
That Oscars was so weird that Smith going up and slapping Chris Rock seemed normal.
I've always tried to avoid watching the Oscars whenever possible. I've known enough actors to realize the majority are nauseatingly self-absorbed and self-important.
Imagine getting slapped over a joke about GI Jane 2. Sure it was a bad joke, but if that is the response to a professional comedian taking a swing at a millionaire actor then god help us. Comedy might as well just die right now. Kudos to Rock for just taking the slap and ignoring Smith's tough guy act. Guarantee you Rock had to face much tougher dudes than Smith working the comedy clubs as an unknown doing his style of comedy.
If it wasn’t staged, Smith should be charged with assault. You can’t put your hands on someone over a bad joke. Especially on live TV. It’s absolutely shameful.

RIP Comedy
If the Oscars wasn't in Mass, Virginia, Kentucky, or Penn...then the state can't bring charges. Chris Rock would have to press chargers generally speaking.
