  • Ketanji Brown Jackson: Next Justice

Joe Biden on Friday nominated Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the supreme court, seeking to elevate a Black woman to the nation’s highest court for the first time in its 232-year history.

Biden’s decision to nominate Jackson to succeed Justice Stephen Breyer, 83, for whom she clerked, sets up a fierce confirmation battle in the deeply partisan and evenly-divided Senate. Breyer, the most senior jurist in the court’s three-member liberal wing, will retire at the end of the court’s current session this summer.

Speaking from the Cross Hall of the White House, the president introduced the 51-year-old judge to the nation as “the daughter of former public school teachers” and a “proven consensus-builder” who has displayed “a pragmatic understanding that the law must work for the American people”.

Just stay out of the cloakroom when Clarence is in there and you'll be okay, Ketanji.

His SCOTUS and VP choices weren’t based entirely on merit. It was predetermined a certain combination of gender and skin color was required.

She's as qualified as any other realistic candidate. Why does any deviation from white male need to be justified?

Yeah, that part of it I don’t like. Would have been better not to announce it beforehand IMO. I don’t know her, but I’m sure she’ll be qualified. She’ll have to make it through a 50/50 Senate, so will have to measure up and probably can’t have too extreme of views either in order to make it.

Of course she's qualified. Why would Biden pick someone who wasn't?

He wouldn’t. I’m just preemptively addressing all the “Biden only picked her cause she’s a black woman” posts that are inevitably coming. 🙄

Never liked Kamala as the VP choice. AG, sure, but she shouldn’t have been VP IMHO.

As if Pence or Quayle were good VPs.

Or Palin. But one 💩tty choice doesn’t justify another. And as the oldest president in history who might not be able to serve two full terms, I think he could’ve and should’ve done better. I mean, they don’t even like each other. 🤷🏼‍♂️

The former House speaker has a distant family connection to the Supreme Court nominee.

The whole world would have been changed had FDR kept Henry Wallace rather than switching to Truman (on the orders of party conservatives).

Justified? If Biden would have kept his mouth shut went through the process and settled on a black woman so be it. The majority of America wouldn't care.

But good old Brandon had to throw merit out the window and GIVE the scotus seat to a black woman. Great message.

I doubt that the pick really matters. All she'll be doing for the next twenty years is writing dissents.

I like the pick. The fact that it triggers the racists is just a bonus. 👍
