The Moral Arc: How Thinking Like a Scientist Makes the World More Moral

In this, the final lecture of his Chapman University Skepticism 101 course, Dr. Michael Shermer pulls back to take a bigger picture look at what science and reason have done for humanity in the realm of moral progress. That is, applying the methods of science and principles of reason since the Scientific Revolution in the 17th century has solved not only problems in the physical and biological/medical fields, but in social and moral realms as well. How should we structure societies so that more people flourish in more places more of the time? Science can answer that question, and it has for centuries. Learning how to think like a scientist can make the world a better place, as Dr. Shermer explains in this lecture based on his 2015 book, The Moral Arc.

Shermer’s Chapman University course, Skepticism 101: How to Think Like a Scientist, covers a wide range of topics, from critical thinking, reasoning, rationality, free speech, cognitive biases and how thinking goes wrong, and the scientific methods, to actual claims and whether or not there is any truth to them, e.g., ESP, ETIs, UFOs, astrology, channelling, the Bermuda Triangle, psychics, evolution, creationism, Holocaust denial, and especially conspiracy theories and how to think about them.

Yeah the leftists can't take debate with all the failures of Biden, so they are putting us on ignore. They have to maintain the information bubble.

The academic world is not really filled with moral folks anymore even in science IMO. It was decades ago for sure, but not anymore.

Agreed. Many of them are bought and paid for now just like everybody else.

                      Painfully so.

Never a citation or a source for the claims he seemingly pulls out of his patoot at will.

yeah I don't have a problem criticizing Trump for things he should be criticized for, I just don't extend the criticisms to the realm of pure fantasy.

Yup. Part of being a scientist is admitting when you are wrong once new knowledge is found and the curiosity to learn about things you don't fully understand. It is missing from our current state of affairs in America.

                                QFT.

I was just listening to a podcast which featured physicist, cosmologist and best-selling author Brian Greene. This guy has made a career of exploring string theory. He nevertheless made it a point to explain he was prepared to drop the theories that had formed the basis of his life's work (not to mention his professional reputation, university tenure, etc.) like so many hot potatoes the minute someone produced evidence that they were wrong. The world needs more - not fewer - people like this guy.

You can't have an ego in science. I mean you can, but if your theory or line of research gets altered by a new discovery it will be very humbling for the one who thinks they are the next Newton.

Ego drives scientists - they want to know something no-one else does, or, prove someone else wrong. They live to do those things.

Not inherently, but scientists as individuals can be corrupted just like anyone else. They’re not immune to it.

Of course. Scientists and science aren't perfect, but they're better than everything else we've tried for understanding the world around us.

The history of Western civilization has been a long succession of religious claims about the nature of reality and the world we live in which have been debunked by science.

That explains “Shelly’s” fear and loathing of science.

Don’t listen to the Shellmeister - that dude is wacked. It’s not a science textbook, sure, but there are plenty of examples of areas where the Bible harmonizes well with science. It doesn’t have to be an either/or proposition.
