A new low for global democracy

    The US is now 26th.

Global democracy continued its precipitous decline in 2021, according to the latest edition of the Democracy Index from our sister company, EIU. The annual survey, which rates the state of democracy across 167 countries on the basis of five measures—electoral process and pluralism, the functioning of government, political participation, democratic political culture and civil liberties—finds that more than a third of the world’s population live under authoritarian rule while just 6.4% enjoy a full democracy. The global score fell from 5.37 to a new low of 5.28 out of ten. The only equivalent drop since 2006 was in 2010 after the global financial crisis.

For the second year in a row, the pandemic was the biggest source of strain on democratic freedom around the world. Through lockdowns and travel restrictions, civil liberties were again suspended in both developed democracies and authoritarian regimes. Many, but not all, citizens have tolerated emergency rules and the expansion of state powers. Divisions are becoming entrenched between those who favour precautionary policies like lockdowns and vaccine mandates and those who are hostile to state interference and any reduction in personal freedoms. At the beginning of 2021, covid-related demonstrations had already been held in at least 86 countries; by the end of the year, protests coalescing around the anti-vax movement were raging from Austria to Australia.

Democracy requires well-educated, rational adults. Those are becoming an endangered species. I imagine as climate change continues to batter civilization into oblivion, the species will go extinct, replaced by frenzied tribes.

Climate change + largest wealth gap in history = a future that resembles “Mad Max.”

Unless something drastically changes, we’re probably only a generation or two away from that, honestly

Will there be a Thunderdome?…. 2 men enter, one man leaves… not too shabby!

watched Fury Road yesterday… better movie than I expected. People become even shittier in the future… hard to see!

Democracy is a win some lose some, relatively cumbersome process that often leads to no to slow change.

In a zero sum political environment, subverting elections and the inner workings of the government become very attractive.

unfortunately the country as a whole loses when that happens…

It’s no coincidence that America was at her peak of power and most widely shared prosperity at a time when higher education was either free or affordable for almost everyone, health care wasn’t crazy expensive and the rich paid their fair share of taxes.

And nobody in America had to adopt the ideology of socialism to make that happen. Weird.

The right-wing attack on democracy continues...

Texas counties reject unprecedented numbers of mail ballots before primary under restrictive new law

Thousands of early ballots have been rejected because voters did not meet a new requirement.

Thank you, Viktor Orban, for showing us where the American right is heading.

The Hungarian strongman, who derailed his country’s nascent democracy, has been a darling of the MAGA crowd for his anti-immigrant policies. He has enjoyed a fawning interview and favorable broadcasts from Budapest by Fox News’s Tucker Carlson, and he has been invited as a featured speaker to next week’s Conservative Political Action Conference in Texas alongside a who’s who of Republican senators, governors and members of Congress, as well as former president Donald Trump himself. Several such luminaries addressed a CPAC gathering in Hungary in May, at which Trump described Orban as “a great leader, a great gentleman.”

But Orban made things awkward for his American friends a few days ago. During a July 23 address (in which he said immigration should be called “population replacement or inundation”) he gave voice to the belief underlying his nationalism: He opposes the mixing of races.

Election deniers are running to control voting. Here's how they've fared so far

Election officials and democracy experts are sounding the alarm, as Republicans who deny the 2020 election results have now moved closer to overseeing the voting process in five different states.

Arizona could become No. 6 on Tuesday, when GOP voters there will decide in that state's primary whether they want to nominate one of the two election deniers running for secretary of state.

                                      The Economist?

The promote war half the time.

                                      LOL!

When you have war mongers "concerned for democracy," they're probably itching to start a war and overthrow a government. They're militant neoliberal globalists. Who cares about their opinions?
