  • How close are the Broncos?

We were a Drew Lock and Gordon fumble away from having a great shot at beating Bengals and Chiefs.

If we can all agree Hackett and the staff he puts together will likely be an improvement from what we have seen here for the Fangio and VJ years, then how close is this team?

Where are the key improvements needed? Obviously QB will help. Does Rogers put us at the top of the division?

    offseason discussion…

Other than QB, need to upgrade the OL (particularly RT), need an edge threat on D, and could use a DL supplement or two as well. The LB roster is also thin. And will need another CB.

I think Muti and Cushenberry are bad fits for what we want to do. Yes, I’ve been pushing for RT in draft for a few years. We need to land a pass rusher in FA.

      I say resign Jewell.

I would go 100% after Rogers & Wilson, but if that doesn’t happen go Pickett. Let him compete with Lock.

Which offensive players might follow Nathaniel Hackett to the Denver Broncos? We take a look at four potential options to consider.

Depends on what we’d have to give up for Rodgers. We need to shore up the secondary and defensive line. Maybe some offensive line as well. Mainly right tackle and guard.

At this point I’d like to say it would cost less to move up for Pickett than it would for Rodgers or Wilson but who knows if we’ll ever get the chance to find out.

I think the Stafford deal is close. Two 1’s and a 3rd. We take in all the salary.

We should know about Rogers or Wilson way before the draft. If those two options fall through, then trade up to get your QB.

Of course I disagree with this quite a bit, but most of the current questions I haver are scheme based questions. Without understanding our coordinators, it might be hard to pin down the necessary changes. A few thoughts on D-line. I'll give us a B minus. Lots of room to improve, but it's also hard to tell with our swinging door at ILB this season - so many injuries there that its hard to get a full assessment.

                        • DreMont Jones is really starting to make an impact. That dude is incredibly strong and not scheme dependent. When he's singled up, he can wreak havoc.
                        • Shelby is a strong contributor, and definitely can make his share of plays in a rotation. He was asked to play a lot of 1 tech, almost NT in a lot of running situations. Not sure that was the best use of his talents, but the line overall did pretty well (well enough to cover up 3rd and 4th string ILBs).
                        • Jonathan Cooper should only get better. That guy is a "heart and soul" guy that just never quits. I think he has a bright future.
                        • Purcell. He's getting older and beat up a bit. If we want a real run stuffer, we probably need to find a younger model.
                        • Malik Reed is a solid rotational player. Great in all phases, but not really a game changer.
                        • Chubb. Here's the big whiff. This guy has oodles of talent, but just can't seem to be the game changer we expected. He would get a lot better with a solid #1 pass rusher across from him. We need another #1 pass rusher if we are going to make any noise in the post season.

There are a lot of great pieces on the O-line, but we probably need to start with a new RT and build from there.

Malik Reed is an RFA and I doubt they bring him back (or at least I hope they don’t).

I agree. OL & DL the cupboard is not bare, but could use some key additions. Will have to see coaches schemes once they are hired. Outside zone leaves Muti & Cush on the outside I would say. Helps Risner. Maybe Glasgow to center.

We’re just like the Browns or Skins from the past 25 years. You guys just don’t know it yet.

I know that I disagree with your posts most of the time - you are a pessimist by default.

But sometimes its like we are just speaking a different language. Both the Redskins and the Browns have had good rosters minus a solid QB lately. Good defenses and run games, decent coaching. Both were limited by subpar choices at QB. Is that what you mean? I don't get it.

We have already been in this position for the past few years - good roster, good young players, but lacking a QB.

Care to explain what "you guys don't know"?

Assuming they are going with an outside zone running game, Muti is probably on his way out. I don't see Cushenberry making it either. Right tackle has been an ongoing disaster for years. Risner and Glasgow can't stay healthy. We badly need reinforcements on the O-line. And the bad news is that even if we land the talent, it is going to take some time to develop cohesion there. And then there is Bowles ...

We could use some more speed at WR. Hamler's injury was pretty catastrophic and there's no telling if he'll be back. We lack a dual threat TE. We've got guys who can act as receivers. We've got guys who can act as blockers. But we have no one who can do both.

Purcell is not the long-term answer on the D-Line and we don't have much depth there. We could absolutely use a quality Edge rusher.

So, even beyond QB, there are multiple needs on this team, and if we trade the house for Rodgers, Watson or Wilson, those needs are unlikely to get addressed now or in the next couple of years unless Paton consistently strikes gold late in the draft.

Acquiring Aaron Rodgers would make Denver a Super Bowl contender. Outside of QB they definitely need upgrades in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Need another legitimate pass rusher.

We should just keep bringing Von back on one year deals and passing him around to 2nd-half contenders every year for draft capital until we land a long term QB.

I'd have to think that extra draft capital from Von would be heading to Green Bay in a potential deal for Rodgers.

                                        As I see it:

#1 Priority: Quarterback, when will this team finally realize this is the most important position in professional sports? Stop masquerading backup-level quarterbacks as starters.
#2: Oline: RT, RG, C, LG (especially if running outside zone scheme). Bolles may be able to play, but I fear holding calls will be atrocious in an outside zone scheme.
#3: OLB: Need more than Chubb or replacement for Chubb for when he gets injured. Not much more to say. The OLBs on this team are not getting to the quarterback.
#4 ILB: Losing Jewell and AJ hurt the defense bad. Need quality starters at both positions. Another area that has been neglected in past drafts.
#5 RB: Williams is a stud. Gordon is a free agent. Need more help behind Williams. I would like to see another good North-South runner added to the stable.
#6 CB: I think Fangio covered up a lot of weaknesses with this position group. Need higher quality starters (Surtain excluded) and backups.

Yeah, this would be part of a plan B obviously (where we don't end up with a Rodgers/Wilson type)

If we turn out to be in contention, you'd want Von to stay anyway.

We need a QB. The final 4 teams were all led by top 10 QB. Without that position we're on the outside looking in every year.

We need ILB and have for years. The guy we got from the Rams needs to be re-signed and he needs help.

                                              Need another CB

OL needs help at RT and C. Risner regressed last season as well.

                                              DL depth needs an upgrade

                                              Edge rushers are needed

We have good talent at WR, RB and TE if our coaching staff understands how to use them. However, there are holes all over the roster and that's going to take a bit to upgrade all of them.
