  • Big Papi Goes HOF

Former Red Sox star David Ortiz, Boston’s beloved “Big Papi” and big-game clutch hitter, was elected Tuesday to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.

Ortiz is a deserving first ballot Hall of Famer but his election shows the inconsistencies in the voters' logic. Steroid hardliner Tom Verducci even voted for Ortiz.

Ortiz is a perceived good guy and was popular with the writers. But the New York Times reported he flunked a steroid test during MLB's 2003 exploratory testing. I don't like how a lesser player with a PED stain gets in before Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens.

I'm glad the writers elected someone though, it would have been the second straight year the BBWAA didn't elect someone if Ortiz didn't get in.
