I made a post on the Mane that offseason, arguing in my typical concise, surgically-precise manner (you know, without too many words) about why it made sense to try and bring him back. I was mocked and ridiculed - basically told the world would be a better place if I was dead, and that I was ugly. I argued that most people had never actually seen me, so there was really no way they could know if I was ugly. The response was, "Yeah, but that doesn't even matter - you're for sure ugly. Go hump a goat."
But anyway - yeah, I argued it. Fat lot of good that did us.👍 3Comment

Yup - this was pretty obvious IMO at the time. Peyton was pretty cooked, and the Broncos wanted to see what they had in Osweiler. Didn't love the move, but I understood why they did it. I think he would've come back for another year if the Broncos would've wanted him to. That's just the kind of competitor he is.Comment

There was this cliff that year ...and Manning fell off it. One of the most pronounced drop-offs for a QB in recent memory imo.Comment

He got hurt in 2015, couldn't use his legs that well when throwing. He could have healed up and played better in 2016, the guy is one of the best players to ever play the game. Should have given him a shot to come back, it was a massive mistake by the broncos. I think Elway thought he could do it all with defense.Comment

Peyton was actually cooked pre-season 2015 because the League, which already hadn't allowed his "medicine" for a few years, started testing for it.
But his decision was already made .... remember after the AFCCG he told Belichick "looks like this is my last rodeo."Comment

But I guess that's kinda who we were at the time.Comment

Which got me to thinking back... I don't really remember. Why did we not tag Broz with all of that on the line?Comment
-
We were going to give him like a 4 or 5 year deal or something like that IIRC. Usually though if you're counting on a guy that much for the next season you'd tag him just for leverage.
But maybe we had some other critical need for the tag. I don't remember.Comment

But we knew he wasn't worth the tag. Lol..
He'd get lost.
Siemian was better because of that.
He had nothing worth the tag. And we knew it. Elway was courting QBs and got cut off by Worm-tongue. And Kubiak said He believed in Munkeyspunk Spunk.
So we fell from glory. And after 7 seasons of what should be top picks... here we are with a Hobbit carrying our ring hopes. 🤦🏽♂️

But I'm guessing there were other factors I'm forgetting.

In an alternate reality we’re in Year 6 of Kirk Cousins. We still wouldn’t have ever won anything but maybe there are a couple heartbreaking wild card losses in there and some time when the team was actually watchable.👍 2Comment

When it comes to "they had their QB issues to sort through", I wish Elway had not panicked to the point of not vetting Paxton Lynch enough, probably an improvised move after losing Osweiler. That season should have been a 'reset' phase with Mark Sanchez at QB despite his shaky performance in camp.
At least Sanchez was a veteran that had won playoff games with a strong defense. The Broncos would have either landed near the top of the draft to consider Trubisky/Watson/Mahomes or borrowed more time to find a proper solution at QB without investing in Lynch.
The following sequence of shuffling through QBs and coordinators without any commitment was a disaster.👍 1Comment

In another alternative reality Elway drafted Josh Allen in 2018 and the broncos and Chiefs have been fighting each other in the AFC championship the last three years. Elway still left the GM position but in this case because the Penner Walton group added him to the owners lists after his dominance as GM.
Its kind of wierd Elway didn't draft Allen because he is kind of more like Elway himself coming out than any other player recently in many ways. Minus some of the polish though. Big with a very very strong arm. Can run and take a hit. A good leader who plays better with the game on the line. A massive threat throwing and running when plays broke down (when Shanny became HC then there wasn't as many breakdowns but before that is a completely different story). Younger people might not know that Elway ran effectively in his early Broncos years. He sometimes ran over DBs like you see Allen doing. It took him a few years, like Allen, before his passing game developed fully.Last edited by uplink; 08-09-2023, 12:09 AM.Comment

Oh... don't get me started on this one. Elway was scouting Allen. Seemed like a no-brainer. We were so mad in my house when they didn't pick him. We have some WY connections. Chubb wasn't a bad pick, but there's always linebackers. There's not always 6'5" QBs that can throw and run like that.
Broncos didn't take Allen, and Broncos fans were subjected to Case Keenum. ****-a-doodle-doo.
