  • The OFFICIAL 2023 Orange Huddle College Football Thread

The poll is Colorado-centric, obviously. Who is your main team? If one of the local schools isn't your thing, please disclose it in the thread. I'm going to set it so that you can only choose one.

The last time I felt this much excitement for college football, CU was running the wishbone. I've always been a Buffs fan, as it pertained to college football. Then I ended up going to BYU - a school I mostly hated growing up, considering how often they beat up on CSU and Air Force (sort of my secondary schools - especially Air Force). Over the years, my BYU fandom has grown. But still, I just can't get on board with anything that is essentially minor league. So, you win the MWC or the WAC. Great, you get to enjoy your annual appearance in the Holiday Bowl. But outside of 1984, it doesn't mean much.

When BYU went independent, it piqued my interest. It still wasn't great. You'd get P5 games in September and parts of October, and then play out the string against the Idaho States of the world while everyone else was playing their conference schedules. But at least you could start the season saying, "You know, if everything goes just right, there is at least a chance we could be in the conversation come November."

As for CU, the administration effectively neutered them, over time. I was excited about the Pac-12 when it happened. What a disaster that turned out to be.

Now, it's all fallen beautifully. BYU has something to play for all season (I think they'll definitely struggle here and there - it will take a few seasons for them to ramp up to where they can consistently win in the Big12). Deion has made CU beyond relevant - they're actually one of the most interesting stories in the sports world, let alone college football. And next season, BYU and CU will be conference mates. Just awesome! Sadly, it's very likely that the Dirty Utes will be joining them, and stinking up the whole place. You can't have everything in life.

So, let's get some college football discussions going. Go Cougs! Go Buffs! Go whoever is playing the Dirty Utes!

        MIZ! ZOU!

.....can't find a QB since Gary Pinkel retired. Pinkel knew exactly what to look for at QB....and could get a 2 star guy and make him awesome. Coach Drink has to win this year and show that he's got a QB or he's finished.

62-35-4 Utah. So when Dom says "Dirty Utes" he's pissed that Utah has owned them.

When Brigham Young came into the valley, he pointed to where the University of Utah would be and said, "This is the place." Provo was just an afterthought.

I really hate them. Playing in the game helped me understand. They are the most arrogant people. It's the whole church and state thing. They're the "good kids." We're the "bad kids." I didn't feel it in my gut last year like I do now.

I'm lucky enough to be one of the many players on the football team that actually has never lost to these bastards, which leads me to end and say this is Utah's world and BYU's living in it.

Larry Scott blew it. They could have been part of a ā€œBig Threeā€ with the SEC and Big Ten and ****ed up literally everything to kill themselves instead

I may actually watch college football again. (I'm not expecting more than 3 to 5 wins out of the Buffs this year, but watch out after that.)

I really don't like all this conference realignment crap. I know their respective TV deals make this a slow arduous process, but it's dumb having these stupid geographic nonsense conferences wrapped around the SEC. Just get to the 40-60 schools that want to be players in football, and make one leauge with divisions that make sense if that's what we are heading to.

Having rivalries with schools in close proximity to one another is a big deal. It fuels interest and conversations..... no one is walking into the gas station wearing a USC shirt, and the guy in line paying for his gas is wearing a maryland shirt, and a conversation starts. No crew of workers in some wharehouse in Indiana, is going to have a bunch of divided loyalties among Indiana, Purdue, Notre Dame, and.........UCLA. And boy oh boy, let me tell ya, that UCF, TCU rivalry starting up...man, it's the talk of the DFW area....not. This sucks. It's like someone watched all the CRAP bowl games every year and said...man this Rutgers VS West Virgina, UCF thing shouldn't just be a one time bowl game...it should happen every season! and then made conferences.

Yeah, I don’t want to invite Oregon/Washington to the BIG. They can (bleep) right off.

They are going to kill the Golden Goose. College football is about rivalries....talking crap to your coworkers etc.

I understand your jab here, but even that isn't quite the same thing...

I was hired by a Broncos fan. One of the guys who I manage at work now, is a Broncos fan. The company I work for covers the western half of the Us. I work at the headquarters. A TON of Nebraska, Kansas, Texas, TTech, TCU, along with a sprinkling of MIZ, K State, Minnesota, and NDSU folks and some others mixed in at the company HQ in Ft. Worth which has drawn quite a bit from out in the provinces to fill the ranks of managment down here. Same with the pro football. Lots of Denver, Seattle, KC, Cowboys, and Raiders fans around, with a good number Chicago, GB, Vikes, and a sprinkling of Cards and Niners here and there. There aren't any Giants or Jets fans, or Dolphins, Titans etc..

I go to a Denver board to troll sure, but Denver is the next closest team going west as a rival to my team and in the same conference and dvision, and always have been. It's not a stretch that I would show up here. It would be wierd if I went to a Falcons board and tried to run smack....no history, no rivalry...what would be the point or fun in that?

People have to be interested in TV sports to be compelled to watch them.....and having a good guy and a villian and buddies to have some beers with and brag or suffer with....is what makes it go.

Once again, you missed the entire effing point. I live 3 states away from you, and we’re still able to have a rivalry. Just because things are different than when you grew up, didn’t mean they are wrong. That’s where sports are now. Streaming, online rivalries, etc.

That move has been in the works for awhile now. 18 team super conference putting out at least 65 mil a year per member.

Before the B1G network, the B1G was considered to be falling behind other conferences. Now it's the #2 to the SEC and not far behind.

But what if the BIG goes on ahead and takes in Cal and Stanford? You could basically have two divisions. One in the east called the Big 10 and one in the west called the Pac-10. You play out the regular season, and the two division winners play in conference championship game in the Rose Bowl at the end of the season.... I know that sounds way out of the box, but I think it could work.
