  • Civility/Personal Attacks

I knew when we started this that there was going to be an occasional need to tip things slightly back and forth, to keep them in line with how we’re comfortable, as it pertains to the atmosphere we’re trying to maintain here. For a refresher on how that atmosphere might look, the board’s rules can be found here: https://www.broncosboard.com/RulesandGuidelines. This thread is also a good starting point: https://www.broncosboard.com/node/55

Now seems like a good time to do some tipping. And I’m not too worried about how it will turn out. I know most of you well enough to know that you’re willing to stay within the lines - even if you might rather not. 🙂

One of the things we won’t do here is to allow personal attacks. The old one (pedophilia) recently reared its ugly head. I didn’t like it back at the Mane, and I don’t like it here. We gave a warning about it; and then took some immediate action, when the warning was ignored. I believe that adults can have even a heated discussion without making up the absolute worst thing you can say about someone, and then weaponizing it. It’s also a little insulting to me. If I had any feeling that something like that was true about someone here, they would be permanently gone.

Racism is another one that regularly comes up. There is a lot of nuance with race relations in the world today. I believe there are certain words and actions that are (or should be) offensive to any decent, reasonable person - things about which nearly 100% of us would say, “That’s not acceptable.” Short of that, there is everything else. I am not going to draw where that line is. At the same time, I don’t want any confusion about how we’re going to moderate it. If you are going to accuse a person of something as extreme as racism, your justification had better be good. Because when we investigate the situation, if we fail to find something that is a blatant example of racism, it’s going to be the person frivolously using the term that is going to be getting the moderator discipline. (“Be civil.”)

My strong suggestion is to avoid the accusation (or even the implication), altogether. If something posted truly seems racist, report the post.

Thanks! We’ll make all this work if everyone pitches in just enough to get to what I see as a huge swath of middle ground.

          .
Well, it was nice for the day it lasted without LABF calling people racist, even if he thinks the daily attacks are clever enough to avoid being banned. They aren't very clever, or veiled, but he still is allowed to continue doing it.

Ultimately, you'll need to decide if you want all the conservatives driven off or banned (for responding to LA's continuous posts calling us racist), or if you will actually start holding LA accountable for ignoring your directive.

Look at all the recent threads, lots of good discussions, and then he comes in with off topic attacks, either generally against conservatives, or against forum members specifically.

You are going to have to decide whether you want this to be a liberal echo chamber, or a sub with good discussion, and minimal incivility.

One problem right off the bat is that whenever anyone discusses or decries racism as a (very real) contemporary social/cultural/political phenomenon or problem, some Trump backers immediately knee jerk, go on the defensive and take it personally - even when content or comments are not directed at them personally. You easily get the impression they would like to make this a taboo subject and to eighty-six anyone who brings it up.

Guys, I'm reading through some of these exchanges from sort of a 20K foot perspective, and I'm just not seeing anything that offensive. I'll reserve complete judgement until I've spent some time tonight, reading through with more attention (ugh). But just at first glance, I'm just not seeing something that is egregious. If someone would like to PM me, and explain why I should be more offended, I'm open to it.

Again, I am not expecting LABF is ever going to be less opinionated. I am not expecting that he is going to be less passionate. Or more warm and cuddly. I don't want him labeling any individual poster (or even a group of specific posters) as racist. He is allowed to have strong opinions about politics. I know for a fact that he has a good number of posters here on ignore. This is feeling a little like a witch hunt. Again, if I have missed something you'd like to bring to my attention, send me a PM.

                That's correct.

And, rather than reciprocate, some of these Trump folks have apparently decided to pursue the tactic of endlessly lobbying the admin to eighty-six people whose input they dislike.

                    Gotcha.

I'm sure he meant white nationalist as a compliment.

Hope you, and Blue, call just as wide strike zone with the rest.

                    I'll stop complaining about it.

P.S. Blue made the same silly comment (no offense, but it is) about him having us on ignore. Fine, he doesn't reply to us, he takes shots at us (virtually every post that isn't a copy and paste spam) when he reads what Blue or others have quoted when THEY are replying to us.

So, I don't know why you and Blue keep pointing that out as a defense of him, since you guys (certainly Blue being active in here), see him repeatedly directing snied or worse (ya know, what nationalist and such) comments at us, but quoting people that quoted us.

Clearly he can do no wrong here. Part of the good old boy club. Or he’s got some good blackmail material on someone. Something’s rotten in Denmark.

You do realize that everyone is doing the exact same thing to him, right? Even directly quoting him and making snide remarks. And he's not retaliating, but you guys are....

If you ignore him too, then the interaction between you and him will be minimal and I believe you'd find the forum much more to your liking.

As noted above, he was requested to stop with the "gray coats" reference. And did stop.

Or, a perfect example of why it should be anything goes, or enforce the same rules as the rest of the site. Having narrow, "this personal attack isn't allowed unless you have really good proof it's true," was asking for trouble.

Hopefully things are in a better place now, but we shall see if everyone can toe the line.

it’s pretty simple really. OM was destroyed for the very same problems that’s happening now.

all it does is put more pressure on mods here….as well as stress to the point where they become jaded of what they created.

Other boards are used as examples of how P & R exists. But those other boards don’t have LA.

                                          So you would think.

You would think it would be even harder to buy into their innocence front when BroncoJoe, for example, announced right here in this sub-forum that his intention was to “troll LABF until he leaves the forum.”

What's the chances LA is actually a woman? Nothing wrong with it of course. I always pictured his trollness as masculine. But now that he/she is crying...idk. seems feminine.
