He is valued for his leadership in the locker room and the tutelage he gives young players. Has played every position in the secondary and every coverage on the planet. Defensive guys rave about him. One of the best defensive football minds of his era. His play (coverage ability) has tapered off the past few years, but he can still fit a role on the team. Don't think him getting a one-year deal means he is a shoe-in to be a starter. Welcome back, Kareem.👍 2 -

I don't see the point in using a gameday spot for him. There is a crowded group of young safeties that need playing time. Sterns, Locke, Turner-Yell, Skinner. Even if he'd serve as a nickel LB, he does not play on special teams. This signing does not make much sense. However, Jackson might not even make the final roster if the young safeties have a good camp.👍 2Comment

the guy sucked last year. He was a liability and exposed by OCs. Wolf is right the guy is just wasting reps for the younger safeties.👍 1Comment

The Broncos didn’t make any massive moves at safety in the last two months. They have third-year safety Caden Sterns returning after missing the final 12 games of 2022 due to a hip injury. They also used a sixth-round pick on Boise State’s JL Skinner.
Jackson’s return gives the Broncos an experienced presence along with that of Justin Simmons. Despite turning 35 last month, Jackson remains quite durable. He has missed just two games in the last three seasons. In 2022, Jackson was one of just two Broncos defenders to start every game; CB Pat Surtain II was the other.
Denver’s secondary appears to be the most stable and productive unit on the roster. Simmons tied for the NFL lead in interceptions last year. Surtain was a first-team All-Pro selection. Slot cornerback K’Waun Williams is one of the best at that position. CB Damarri Mathis did enough after moving into the starting lineup to compel Denver to move on from Ronald Darby.
And now, Jackson returns. And if he doesn’t start, it means one of the cluster of young safeties on the roster — Sterns, Skinner, Delarrin Turner-Yell or the re-signed P.J. Locke – developed into a starter.

Last year they signed him and it was a mistake. This year they are doing the same thing.
just let the younger players play the position….hire him as a DB assistant if he brings the mental goods to the kids.
Chalk up another Paton derp….
Wasted reps last year….we will see if they are wasted yet again.

He’s old and should be a part time guy at best at this point but he’s my favorite player of the Fangio years so it is cool to see a fan favorite and leader still with the team👍 1Comment

Final roster cut is when - the very end of August? Why would this be a bad thing to keep the competition both ways - old and young? Best players play.
The young guys need to show their potential, then they can unseat “the old guy,” but if the team wants him around for four months, why is that a problem?
Why in the hell would people be ok with 37 rookies at minicamp, but not one experienced vet coming in for a (paid) tryout? There is a massive amount of offseason change happening with this team, let’s not get all knee jerk until we see the final 53.👍 4Comment

Maybe someday he will. If he wants to that's certainly an option.
But I am thankful you and wolf can provide us laughs this afternoon with your incessant pants pissing on K-Jack agreeing to terms on a deal that doesn't guarantee he makes the team.
They have literally nothing to lose by having him compete for a spot on the final 53-man roster.Last edited by Vera Hara; 05-08-2023, 05:27 PM.👍 2Comment

The horror of the Broncos bringing back a guy with twelve starting years in the NFL and nearly 200 games played for one potential last ride on the team.
Sterns hasn't stayed healthy at any level of football. He has been good when available. Problem is he isn't available.
Locke, Sterns' collegiate teammate, has been a solid role player, but is also a one-year deal. He isn't a lock to make the team either. His main draw is that he has been a consistent and core special teams guy under two regimes. I think it would be a stretch to think he is anything beyond a role player.
Turner-Yell is likely a back-up at best who can be a core special teams player for a long time. Really a dime a dozen player.
Skinner has a ton of potential, true starting potential and will make the final roster, but has no NFL experience.
Tell me once again what the downsize is to having Jackson compete for a job?
That he might take away reps from others guys who can't stay healthy or have limited pro upside?
Lmao.👍 1Comment

There's 90 spots all the way until final cuts this season. Those young cats will have a vet leader presence at worst and if one of em gets hurt there's the vet.
I don't see it as a bad deal.
Kareem is an old man for being a DB. But old fellas got a few bits of wisdom that bleed off em. So whatever.
He used to bring smacks that just leveled dudes. He gets a Salute from me for being a bad ass no matter how much we sucked. He deserved multiple playoff runs in his prime. Too bad we stunk.

Great thread of negativity. When the Broncos eventually turn it around, some of you will stroke out...especially, if Paton is still in the front office.
Who knows if young safeties pan out? Injuries happen. It's May 9th. It isn't like Kareem signed a 4 year, 50 million dollar deal.
Have fun nit picking the smallest of details each move made by "your" beloved Broncos.👍 1Comment

I think having him in the locker room is smart. Having him in the team room is smart. Letting all the young guys see and hear how he prepares, how he assesses the other team's game plan, how he interprets and implements our game plan... all of these thing are good examples for the young guys. Bottom line, off the field, he is great for the team. If he spends any time on the field it isn't too smart of a move. Unless there are injuries then I get it. You're not gonna ask him to play special teams... not at his age and limited athletic ability now. Worth the signing just hope it is full on mentorship role!

That was like 3 years ago. I love Kareem but he’s just about washed physically hence why Paton keeps drafting safeties hoping a couple of them develop to take jackson spot and Simmons when his contract is up if he still wants big money.Comment

i don’t think he makes it unless sterns Locke skinner all flop early as hell and neither of them are ready to play ahead of a guy whose definitely a true veteran now he’s going to make them earn it or else Jackson will indeed make the team but I see one of the young guys making it not worth it since jackson not going to play special teams if he’s a back up you know
