    29 Career Starts
    Two-time Team Captain 👀 👀
    2022 Second Team All-Big Ten
    2021 Second Team All-Big Ten
    2020 Honorable Mention All-Big Ten

Prospect Summary from Dane Brugler of The Athletic
Patrick “PJ” Mustipher grew up in a football family. His older brother (Sam) was an offensive lineman at Notre Dame (2014-18) and played two seasons with the Bears while his father (Sam) played at West Virginia. He was a four-year starter at McDonogh School (14 sacks as a senior) and was the No. 1-ranked heavyweight wrestler in Maryland. A four-star recruit, he was Penn State’s starting nose in 2020 and returned from an ACL injury in 2022 to earn All-Big Ten honors. Mustipher is stout at the point of attack with the upper-body strength to work his way under blocks. He was a two-time team captain and “coach on the field,” according to defensive coordinator Manny Diaz. However, he is a heavy-footed plugger and lacks explosiveness in his hands and lower body to easily unwind and detach. Overall, Mustipher can fight for a spot in a rotation, but his labored movements and limited athleticism puts a cap on what he can provide an NFL defense.

    GRADE: Priority Free Agent

Anonymous Scout Quotes from Bob McGinn of Go Long
    SCOUTS’ NIGHTMARE:
He was a two-time captain. He started for three years. He has ideal size (6-4, 319). His brother, Sam, was the Chicago Bears’ starting center the past two seasons. What’s not to like? Mustipher blew out his knee in mid-2021 and wasn’t as effective in ’22. He also has short arms (32 ¾) and small hands (9). “He’ll probably get drafted based on size and there aren’t a ton of 3-4 noses and you’ve got to pay through the nose if you want to sign an offensive or defensive lineman as a (college) free agent,” said one scout. “He’s a great kid … but he’s really overrated.”

I like this pickup, I think he could even make the team as a backup and at least get on the practice squad.

Yeah, nose tackle is a really unique position, and you can throw away a lot of the measurables for that particular position, I think. What it boils down to is -- can he neutralize the center and guards in run defense? Can he get a bit of pressure in pass defense?

Maybe he can -- the bloodlines and intangibles are very interesting with this dude.

If he flashes at all, you have to believe Purcell is gone. Might even make the team if Purcell stays, depending upon his level of play.
Very interested to see the NT battle play out.
