        SCOUTING REPORT: SUMMARY

Will Anderson Jr. is no doubt an elite edge prospect. He's a very rare prospect in having huge athletic talents - is super strong for his size and has dynamic quickness combined with outstanding technique and a non-stop motor. We really struggled in finding any serious negatives to his game. It's very likely his impressive college production as a pass rusher to carry over into the pro game and we see him as a first-year pro bowler.

At the NFL Combine, Gonzalez put on a show, running an official 4.38 40-yard dash and posting one the highest RAS score among all corners in this year’s class. Gonzalez has elite size and length and is as fluid as they come as a defensive back. He displays the ability to flip his hips and carry upfield without losing any speed and has impressive foot quickness and flexibility. He is extremely explosive out of his stance and when making a break on the ball, so it was no surprise to see him test well on the vertical and broad jump.

Though he is at his best as a man-coverage corner, Gonzalez is scheme-transcendent. With his skillset, athleticism, and knowledge of the game. There is no team that wouldn’t welcome him in with open arms.

Gonzalez doesn’t have the same violent nature as someone like Devon Witherspoon, but he is still plenty physical. I would like to see him do more in situations where he gets washed away from the play far too easily, and he could certainly clean up on his tackling technique and angles.

How he fits: Dominant press-man corner that can start on the outside Day 1 and completely shut down one side of the field. All-Pro potential.

              Round grade: Top-10 pick

              Rationale for the pick:

Yup, Jalen Carter was still on the board. We went with the adage you can't win your draft in round 1, but you can ruin it. The bust potential was just too high.
So, we go with a blend of BPA and positional need. Why not Witherspoon? You can't teach 6'1. As we have seen with Surtain, having a shut down corner on one sad is super valuable, and we pair him with plenty of DL help (more to come) and the defense that was a weakness will become a strength. Super stoked to have what could be the best corner in the draft.

With the 7th overall pick, The Las Vegas Raiders select...

                Devon Witherspoon, CB, Illinois

                115 TACKLES (SOLO) | 11.5 TFL | 1.0 SACKS | 25 PASS DEF | 5 INT | 1 FF
                • Pro Bowl Corner? or All-Pro Safety? He has the football IQ to play both positions
                • Elite boundary corner with ability to close off one side of the field
                • Plays his best on an island (75% of his defensive snaps were in man coverage)
                • 2022 Big Ten Tatum-Woodson Defensive Back of the Year
                • 2022 Senior Bowl All- American
                • PFF All-American First Team
                • NO. 2 graded CB with overall grade of 91.6, and a coverage grade of 92.0, via PFF
                • Led the nation in forced incompletions (16)

The Raiders select “the human missile” Devon Witherspoon who will operate as Patrick Graham’s next best warhead in this defensive build. Anyone that loved watching the honey badgers film, then get a sneak peak of Witherspoon's tape because he is one the most versatile defensive backs of this class. Witherspoon delivers impressive handsy combat style in coverage to pair with excellent foreseeable play recognition in run support.

A long overdue need for the Raiders is that of corner/ safety who can locate the soft zones and disrupt a player like Travis Kelce. Raiders tried this with Jonathan Abram, who smack talks, who got lost in coverage along with poor angles in the pros and Kelce took advantage. Witherspoon does talk the smack, but the film backs his claim to fame.

In the final conclusion; Lance Zierlein was his largest critic and we do respect his evaluation, he could be very well correct that Witherspoon is CB2 or Nickel, all because of measurables and no combine testing. Christian Gonzalez was also high on the Raiders board, factoring his testing, range of coverage, level of competition, including his age of 20 with so much room to develop in the NFL. Detroit selecting Gonzales 6th overall, accelerated the Raiders to make this decision urgently.

The Raiders proudly select their guy out of Illinois in also having good fortune with Big Ten Defensive backs; Jack Tatum, Charles Woodson. They also drafted Nate Hobbs in the 5th Round in the 2021 draft, who has showed some flashes early on. Now we enter the Devon Witherspoon era, welcome to The Las Vegas Raiders!

LT from Ohio State, Paris Johnson Jr.
                          6'6 313

                          1st Team All American 2022

Duane Brown is the current LT but is going into his 16th year and has 1 year on his contract. Mekhi Becton is a wild card who has not played in 2 years. Johnson is probably one of the safest picks in the draft and filled a need for the Jets.

With the 15th pick in the 2023 NFL Draft......THE Green Bay Packers select........

                              Jordan Addison, WR, USC

                              5’ 11’
                              173 lbs

                              • Vertical: 34 inches
                              • Broad Jump: 10 feet, 2 inches

                              Draft Scouting Report:

                              Rating: 90.3 (All-Pro)

                              Pro Comparison: DeVonta Smith

                              Summary:

Jordan Addison is an advanced, dynamic wideout with outside and inside experience and a complete game. He's smaller and skinnier in stature and not a super twitched up, hyper athlete, but he gets the most out of his athletic gifts with sharp breaks in his routes. He battles through contact in the route and gets North-South in a hurry. His speed looks like a clear positive to his game, and he will threaten most CBs in the NFL. Not a true burner, though, and not a contested-catch guy because of his smaller frame/catch radius, but his hands are rock solid. His ball-tracking is very good, and he can run a variety of routes. Overall, he's a high-floor, somewhat-high-upside WR who should move the needle early in his NFL career.

                              Strengths:
                              • Sharp, sudden routes at all levels
                              • Good explosion/lean while running routes and after the catch
                              • Catches everything, rock-solid hands
                              • Speedy type down the field

pick made at 8:44 am mtn time.

                                  Broad Jump: 11' 4" 👀👀👀

Overview (by Lance Zierlein of NFL.com)
Perimeter corner with desired blend of size, strength and athleticism. Banks is capable of release disruption from press. He plays with smooth hips and easy feet to pedal and glide around the field. He’s capable of matching the release and running with his opponent. However, he struggles to play with poise and awareness when his back is to the football. He needs to play with better route anticipation and reactive quickness at the break point, but his eye-popping NFL Scouting Combine testing and scheme versatility should create interest from a wide range of NFL teams. Banks has first-round traits and could become a CB1 if he can play with better discipline when challenged.

                                  BowlenBall's Rationale for the Pick
The Steelers were hoping that either Paris Johnson Jr. or Broderick Jones would fall to them at # 17. There's a big drop-off from those two to the next prospect on our O-line board though, so we turned our attention to the other big need, cornerback. The Steelers recently signed 32-year-old Patrick Peterson to a two-year contract, but it remains to be seen how much he actually has left in the tank. In any case, he'll serve as a good mentor and guide to the inexperienced but physically talented Banks.

                                  Player Comp
                                  Jamel Dean, Tampa Bay Bucs

JSN is my favourite kind of WR prospect, a true WR1 who gets underrated due to his 40 time, but his agility and shiftiness is off the charts (6.57 3 cone and 3.93 short shuttle). Gives me flashbacks to Cooper Kupp (who I also drafted btw). Not quite as big as your typical Chargers receiver but Allen and Williams can't be counted on to stay healthy. Hopefully for them the nagging hammie this year was an anomaly for JSN. And don't forget about that time he got 347 yards and 3 TDs in the Rose Bowl.

And just for fun I asked chatgpt to write a profile. It is...not up to date:

"Jaxon Smith-Njigba is a highly-talented wide receiver prospect who is considered one of the top recruits in the country. He has been praised for his impressive speed, route-running ability, and overall athleticism on the field. At 6'0" and 185 pounds, he has an ideal build for a receiver and has shown the ability to make tough catches in traffic.

Off the field, Smith-Njigba is known for his strong work ethic and dedication to his sport. He has shown the discipline and determination necessary to succeed at the next level, and is eager to continue to develop his skills and exceed expectations.

Smith-Njigba has been heavily recruited by a number of top college programs, and is expected to make an immediate impact wherever he plays. He has been compared to some of the top receivers in the game, and looks poised to follow in their footsteps and become a star at the next level. With his combination of talent, work ethic, and dedication, there is no doubt that Smith-Njigba will be one of the most sought-after prospects in the country for years to come."

                                            NFL Comparison
                                            Josh Jacobs

                                            Overview
Full-menu back blending a smorgasbord of position-specific traits that allow him to affect games. Robinson is well-built with a compact lower half and pairs a low center of gravity with agile feet. There are elements of both fight and flight in his running style, but defenders can never be quite sure what they are going to get. He’s a capable inside/outside runner with unique footwork to stack moves and reset pathways, but can plow into tacklers at a moment’s notice using elite contact balance to keep the run rolling. He might need to dial back efforts to search out big runs so frequently and take what is there a little more often to keep from getting bogged down. His pass-catching talent ensures the opportunity for Robinson to see a high number of touches. He has a chance to become one of the more productive runners in the league very quickly.

                                            • Feet are fast and fully connected with his vision for optimal results.

                                            • Runs low to the ground and possesses rare contact balance.
                                            • Ability to stack moves adds a level of unpredictability to his carries.

                                            • Occasionally looks to better deal run lanes when he should be finishing.
                                            • Needs to run with a more decisive plant-and-go mentality.
                                            • Needs more consistent urgency in pass protection duties.

“He has to eat. The more carries he gets, the more damage he does. I know it’s not popular, but I would draft him in the first round and just get him the rock as much as I possibly could. He’s a much tougher runner than Saquon (Barkley) was coming out.” -- Personnel executive for NFC team

                                              6' 1" 280 lbs

Undersized, one-gapping defensive tackle who is explosive and productive. He’s a strong and determined player, but Kancey is still going to be a hit-or-miss run defender due to his lack of mass and length. While he will get pushed around at times, his first-step quickness and short memory allow him to make tackles in the backfield. He’s a nightmare for offenses as a pass rusher. His twitchy feet can slide and reset points of attack. His leverage and motor are often too much for guards to handle alone. Kancey might be most effective as a rotational run defender and full-time, sub-package rusher, but his size will not define him in the NFL.

                                              Strengths
                                              • Posted 14.5 sacks and 27.5 tackles for loss in two years as a full-time starter.
                                              • Combination of first-step burst and contact balance stands out.
                                              • Captures easy wins against leaning interior blockers.
                                              • Excellent change-of-direction quickness and reactive athleticism.
                                              • Terror in the pocket as a pass rusher.
                                              • Laser-sharp focus on fastest possible way into the pocket.
                                              • Slide speed to start at B-gap and finish rush in the opposite A-gap.
                                              • Forward-charging attack eventually finds an edge or angle to exploit.
                                              • Gets to quarterbacks with a top-flight closing kick.
                                              Weaknesses
                                              • Lacks prototypical size. (NOT A PROBLEM FOR KC)
                                              • Big guards can latch in and end the rush at times if he’s not first off the snap.
                                              • Lack of length shows up if he can’t get to a rush edge.
                                              • Ducks head into blockers, losing sight of run play development.
                                              • Fails to mirror lateral steps; gets reached and sealed by athletic blockers.

                                              RATIONALE for this PICK

The Chiefs don't have a problem utilizing "undersized" lineman, placing a high value on versatility to move outside/inside. The Chiefs draft large ends, and often kick them inside. Kancey is an absolutely relentless, high energy penetrator who is a nightmare for most guards to handle one on one. He can also kick outside on occasion in Spags rotational scheme. Spags will bring blitzes but prefers pressure from the front 4. Kancey won't be an anchor type in the run game, but he does get up field in a hurry and zero in on ball carriers. He's a great scheme fit for the Chiefs. D lineman who can provied interior pressure are quickly becoming VERY expensive on the open market and are not easy to come by, and so even though KC has a strong need here for an offensive tackle, Kancey was too valuable to pass here when he was available at 23.

Kancey was the top rated player left on my board here and I had him as one of the 15 top players. I also think, Kansas City, though needing an OT, can find one of quality later on, and since they rostered all 11 rookies they drafted last year, they will be looking to expend some of the draft capital they have this year.

Shananahan and the Jacksonville Jaguars are now on the clock!
