This isn't a good sign... sounds to me like they are still negotiating a contract. Does this still have the potential to fall through?

Determining what Paton's role will be...how coordinators will be treated...and of course control of roster.
My money is that they are going back and forth on termination clauses - with or without cause. Where Payton has been fined and banned from the league before, it's going to be an interesting conversation and one in which Penner has full leverage...which Payton will not acknowledge, I'm sure.
both these are typically sticking points with tenured coaches. Payton states that he wants a vote in all matters, but trust me when I say this, he wants full control as well. This guy is Mike Shanahan 5.0 and mentored by one of the most aggressive coaches in NFL history in Bill Parcells - you think Mike Tomlin or Tom Coughlin or Harbaugh's are tough - this guy redefines the term fire in the belly.
Both Harbaugh and Payton are no-nonsense coaches...it's going to turn over our roster for sure after having the soft-touch Hackett. Payton wants a say in this for sure.
Imagine Harbaugh's accountability - this is considered 'with cause' portion of the contract...meaning he's signing up to take the fall for everyone elses mishap at UMichigan. I think this ultimately had him looking at NFL jobs until his legal team gave him the all-clear to return.

Guys...it's on my desk to approve. I just wanted to get the board's opinion before I signed it. Since draft picks on unproven talent are soooo much more important than coaching, I am inclined to scrap the contract to find a free coach.Comment

It's happened before. Bucs sent 8 mil in cash and 2 first rounders and 2 second round picks for Gruden. NE sent a 1st, 5th, and 6th for Belichick. Jet's sent a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th for Parcells. I was quite surprised that this was all they wanted for Payton but I also think the Broncos feigning interest in other coaches, and the other 3 teams dropping out may have lowered it.Comment

I don’t get the payton hate. Who were they supposed to take? Ryans wanted no part of Denver. Harbaugh out. Gannon wants to stay in Philly. Could argue for Callahan but that’s just going to end up more of the same if he failed in 2023.
payton isn’t getting fired if the broncos have a sub 500 season. This is 4/5 years plus for stability from a HOF coach(crazy if anyone thinks he won’t be in it).

I didn't say I liked they had to give up picks but I'm damn glad it wasn't anything like the others since they are in charge and were going to hire him anyway. Besides, it's like the Chief fans laughing at our diminished picks and how many they have. It really doesn't matter when the dumbasses rarely get the picks that help.Comment
