It's looking like MAYBE Fields might be something.
You have Surtain, a great player who was taken instead of Fields, but we all know the QB is what makes the NFL world go round.
That was Patons first draft in control. He's paid to get this stuff right.
Also, Paton did control that draft, but he did NOT yet have the power to fire Fangio, so if you want to argue that Fields being given over to Fangio would have been less than optimal, it's a valid point. The Broncos also still had Lock, who Fangio already hated.
Still, you only get so many free shots at a QB....He was there at pick 9. No need to trade any assets, and the Broncos passed. Same with Allen...and similar circumstances where you were going into the season with a lame duck coaching staff.
Denver has missed some huge opportunities in recent years trying forge ahead with coaching staffs they know aren't going to be around the following year.
Anyhow....Fields...starting to look like he might well be the gem of that QB class, and he was there for the taking.
