It's looking like MAYBE Fields might be something.

You have Surtain, a great player who was taken instead of Fields, but we all know the QB is what makes the NFL world go round.

That was Patons first draft in control. He's paid to get this stuff right.

Also, Paton did control that draft, but he did NOT yet have the power to fire Fangio, so if you want to argue that Fields being given over to Fangio would have been less than optimal, it's a valid point. The Broncos also still had Lock, who Fangio already hated.

Still, you only get so many free shots at a QB....He was there at pick 9. No need to trade any assets, and the Broncos passed. Same with Allen...and similar circumstances where you were going into the season with a lame duck coaching staff.

Denver has missed some huge opportunities in recent years trying forge ahead with coaching staffs they know aren't going to be around the following year.

Anyhow....Fields...starting to look like he might well be the gem of that QB class, and he was there for the taking.

Out of the QB's in that class Fields was the one I wanted, but I preferred Parsons and am thrilled we did not take Fields and took Surtain. Fields has had two good games, one decent one, so not going to lament missing the pick. And this year, it is not the QB making the NFL world go round. See GB-Lions and Buff-Jets just as small examples of whats been going on all year.

It has been interesting how the overall product in the NFL is alot less QB centered this year. I think the Fangio Shell has stymied most QB's and teams playing a lot of DB's more often etc...

So, I agree with your point here...and I also am not sold on Fields either. I thought at the time Paton made the correct pick. (I also wasn't sold on Parsons)

Just putting this out there though since Fields does seem to be making some small progress lately on a team with crap on the roster.

Bet he is a happy camper after his former team won the World Series last night.

Zero is fine. He isn't the board urinal mint like Bull Nutz is. He actually talks some football and puts money where his mouth is.

While I don’t totally disagree, he had all of 123 yards passing and 4.4 ypa. We all know that that style of play isn’t sustainable and isn’t what wins Super Bowls.

And let me know when, after Buffalo lost today, you figure out who the clear best team in the NFL is right now.

I wanted Parsons but Surtain was on my list of guys I'd be happy with. Fields isn't making me resent that pick.

Surtain will be considered the best CB in the NFL is not now then soon.

Fields is not a first round QB. May last pick in first round. At best he's a 2nd round talent. A poor man's Colin Kapernick who SF actually selected with a pick from Denver IIRC

Him and Murray look similar . All they can do is run the ball.

Lamar is alot better and BALT is not sure they want him long term

before you beat the Jags....I was one of the few people on here actually optimistic that Russ could turn things around and that Denver would be set to compete in 2023..and IM the one that does nothing but post detrimental things about the Broncos? Most of the Broncos fans on this board have had worse to say than me since about week 4.

The Broncos are struggling but it’s certainly not because of drafting Surtain over Fields in the draft. Keep slinging it, Zero, and hope that something you write sticks.

I didn't even say that. I brought it up as a topic becasue if Fields does continue his upward trend, it will be something to look back on and ask if Denver should have done something different. I agreed 100 percent with the Surtain pick at the time and if you read my post, I still am not sold on Fields.

And the craziest thing is that Jalen Hurts, who was a 2nd rounder, looks like the best of the “mobile QB” bunch.

Surtain has a high probability of being a perennial All-Pro.

Fields has a high probability of being a backup and/or out of the league due to injury in the next 2-3 seasons.

When? The most yards he ran for in a game was Week 16, 2014, he had 151 yards.
