  • The game is done.

Less than 24 hours the worst call in history followed up by the worst call in history to help the poor little helpless quarterbacks.

    The game utterly sucks.

      1. Yes, I thought the Brady roughing call was the worst call I'd ever seen until the Jones call last night.

On that call - Jones is rushing in, hits and strip sacks Carr. Jones has completely secured the ball already as their momentum carries him and Carr to begin to fall. Again, Jones now being in full possession of the football, is a ballcarrier, and Carr, is no longer a passer. He is making a tackle at this point. Both fall, and Jones, with the one arm he still has competely free, still tries to brace himself anyhow...which he technically at this piont isn't even obligated to do since HE HAS THE BALL and is being tackled.

The REF that made the call did get asked about it. His response was that his interpretation of the rule is that Carr, is still afforded the protections of a player in a passing stance or in the act of passing even though he no longer has the football. The Ref further stated that those prectections extend until a time when the QB is able to again protect himself even after the ball is passed/released etc. That to him, included a looseball/fumble situation.

I've never seen a guy, who is in full possession of a football, be called for roughing the passer.....technically it should not be possible to be a player who is both a ball carrier and a pass rusher. You can not be both at the same time. But whatever....the bigger point is that in their effort to protect the QB they have ruined the game. Like in war, trying to save a city by destroying it. At some point, the NFL owners, etc are going to have to choose between accepting a certain degree of risk involved in a violent sport, or not. If you want your 250 million dollar QB to remain injury free....the onus or protecting him and your investment can't all be on rules and ref unless you want to fundamentally change the sport. (which some would argue they've already done and are doing) ....if you want to play the game we all know as American Football, then your QB will be in peril at times. And perhaps, let the coaches gameplan to protect the QB, and let the front offices assemble a line to keep defenders off the QB.....instead of relying on a Ref, and a set of riduclous rules that distort the sport.

      2. This isn't just about roughing the passer. The catch rules and personal foul rules are too extreme. I think we'd do well to understand that rules are in place to govern gameplay and REFs are there to enforce the rules. The idea of having a catch scrutinzed frame by frame was never intended. A ref and most rational people can tell if someone has caught a football or not. 95% of the time, if it looks like a catch, it was a catch. 4% of the other times...you can't tell so it's a judgement call...and if the eyes think it was or wasn't just roll with it. 1% there is a blatant error. 1% should be a fail rate we can just live with. We ought to be able to have some way like replay or challenge to correct a clearly wrong call. Refs aren't perfect and trying to interpret rules to the gnats ass isn't what the point of rules are...they exist to facilitate a game. ...I know this isn't a soccer forum, but offsides in Soccer has long been a joke for the same reasons....the spirit of that rule is to keep players on offense from camping out downfield...it was NEVER meant to be a gnats ass call or to be so strictly interpreted....and same could be said with the blue line offsides in the NHL....let's replay this and take away a spectacular goal because this skate was 1 millimeter passed the blue line when the puck entered the zone. .....the spirit of the rule is simply to not have players blatantly getting in the zone or camping out in the offensive zone waiting on the puck....never was intended to be some millimeter specific call.

At some point we have to remember games are meant to be played...not constrained.

Refs apparently hate Chris Jones. He can't tackle the QB, can't say mean words, and can't tap Lord Tommy's shoulder pad. Is there anything he's allowed to do?

There is also a big factor that no one talks about. We can assume the major networks like bspn or fox sports etc won't due much investigative reporting. They would be damaging themselves if they discredit the very product that literally gives them their paychecks.

              Examples

The NFL every year has at least one big owners meeting. That meeting has strict gag rules. Personally, I think "gag rules" of any kind should be illegal. To even issue a gag rule ought to be met with severe fines.

We will never truly know how much money is brought in through fines leveed on their players. From their socks not being worn properly or their jerseys not being tucked in, to the unreal money they make off fines leveed on roughing penalties. Also how much they make off players or coaches or fellow owners for violating "gag rules."

There is no "insider trading" consequences that would wreck the economy, and there aren't any national security situations. ITS FOOTBALL and that's it.

Every year at those meetings you can be assured they are discussing how to make more subjective ambiguous rules. They can shape games so simply and they are always looking for ways to get money from their millionaire ignorant employees. We'll never know how much they rake in.

It was a terrible call on the strip sack. Flag came out very late too. Jones was already running down the field with the ball. They made up for it on the FG holding call later though. Jones has had a target on his back since he decided to hang his junk out during the 40 at thr combine! 😆

Will you keep watching when the games resemble the pro bowl? Cause that's where it is going and that is what the league wants.

I'm basically done with the league already. I didnt watch any of the draft this year for instance. I didn't watch one preseason. Only watched 3 quarters of opening night.

Stopped playing Fantasy in 2018. Missed 2 of the last 3 SBs.

The sport is totally ruined. Wonder which one they'll go after next. AMERICAN FOOTBALL isn't the ONLY SPORT with a concussion problem.

                  But

For some reason the national media doesn't really relentlessly go after those sports.

                  Huh

Will you watch it when QBs are throwing 8 TDs a game?

Some said the game was done when the rules stopped safeties from decleating receivers over the middle - ie. the "Atwater effect." And yet, the game goes on.

I don't have an issue with the end zone messages. My problem is the change the rules too often and crap like what happened to Chris Jones. This week and last week. It's nonsensical. If Derek Carr can't handle Chris Jones falling on him, then Carr shouldn't be out there. Good Gawd, could you imagine Elway getting these kind of calls? Holy smokes. Or Dan Marino? At the end, old Dan looked like Robo Cop out there with his various braces and flak jackets.

which is you won’t be able to tackle the QB. You’ll have to wrap him while standing, or they’ll give him flags on his hips you’ll have to pull.

We say that, but Josh Allen will get blasted multiple times this week with no calls, and he's still going to lead his team to a Superbowl this year. The roughing penalties need to be reviewable and subject to change by the crew in NY (hopefully without a challenge). I honestly felt like that call in the Chiefs game had more to do with Draft Kings and Vegas than player safety.

Can't be reviewable. Can't review subjective plays based on a refs "JUDGEMENT." They tried the same stupid thing with the PI rule after the bad NON CALL a few years ago.

Then they made the PI calls AND NON CALLS reviewable. It was a disaster. The refs were hardly ever overruled. Why? Cause there will always be just enough to justify the call. Would they be able to challenge NON CALLS for roughing?

That's the train coming down the road. I am wondering why AMERICAN football seems to the real target by the beloved media. Why, for instance wasnt there an autopsy on Gordie Howe, who played in the NHL for 30 years without helmets. I ask that cause for some reason there was a call for an autopsy on Frank Gifford. Why him? Aaaaand they found CTE.

                                      Nevermind....

Crosby did that on Mahomes monday. Just held him until they blew the flag. If they are going to get a flag anyway might as well blow the QB up and hope you knock him out.

Remember "in the grasp"? Teams didn't want that rule either because the QB could escape and make a play. They were blowing plays dead as soon as the QB had been touched. Not sure what they do, but if the announcers, the stadium, and even the most casual of fans can look at a call and know it's 1000% BS, there should be a mechanism to overturn it...
