  • Is 1st Down really the Problem?

I think we briefly discussed in the GDT, but just off the cuff it seems like we're in terrible situations in later downs more than normal.

Looked up the situational splits and it does seem pretty bad. Looks like we fail to gain anything on 1st down 40+ percent of the time.

    That can't be normal.

KC splits for comparison... Those later downs look much more manageable.

Go to any Bills board when Hacket was OC and you will see thread after thread of first down runs for nothing. Bills fans laughed when we hired Hackett…. It appears they had it right..

It's a huge problem. They also shit the bed and have a lot of three-and-outs. That's expected when you can't get anything done consistently on early downs and have one of the most penalized teams in the league.

"It's first-and-thirty for the Denver Broncos."

"It's second-and-twenty for the Denver Broncos."

"It's third-and-forever for the Denver Broncos."

**** that shit. At least the team was quite disciplined and not penalized a lot under Fangio. Penalties coincide with coaching. Execution is poor. Lots of these offensive coaches are first-timers. Good thing we told Munchak and Modkins to GTFO.

        Woops!

I’d venture to guess offenses that suck real bad are in third and long all the time…

Fangio’s D was always getting penalized, that was up his wheelhouse. It was not disciplined, and on third downs the QB was always getting sacked. The OL was trash under Munchak despite being one of the highest paid assistants in the league. He was overrated.

Last year vs the Raiders Teddy got hit 17 times. The line was GARBAGE.

Don’t get me wrong, it still is, and I don’t know why Paton keeps signing retreads and bums there. There were some interesting prospects in the draft for OL under this current zone scheme. Totally ignored.

I refuse to believe Wilson just 'isn't good at' quick 1st down passing. That's low lying fruit for most QBs... unless they have a higher-than-average difficulty running the ball I guess.

The Slant to Sutton was one of the first plays of the game and should be a staple in this offense. They should be scheming Big O to take those.

And taking a look at Russ' 2020 splits... 1st down passing appeared to go pretty well for him.

And surprisingly those 2020 Seahawks passed more than ran on 1st and 10. We're much more run heavy. And it's not working.

Stats indicate otherwise. One of the least penalty prone teams in 2021 and 2020. Middle-of-the-pack (overall) in 2019.

You can see 100% when it’s a run play on 1st down….ends in the RB getting stuffed at the line for minus yards.

meanwhile the low IQ DL gifts offenses every game with 1st and 5s due to stupidity.

im sure preseason reps would’ve made it a whole lot different though.

                    worst excuse I’ve ever seen.

They were top 5 in the beginning of 2021, I suppose it was cleaned up from your link.

Plenty of incompetence from that staff to point out, I’m not pining for Fangio whatsoever.

I haven't seen us complete that play since 2015. At least we have a QB that can make the throw now.

With the RB's room now demolished, we have to throw a lot more.
