AP: NFL Pro Bowl Changes to Skills Events, Flag Game with Peyton Manning Overseeing

The NFL Pro Bowl as we knew it is no more.

According to Rob Maaddi of the Associated Press, the NFL will replace its All-Star game with a weeklong skills competitions and a flag football game, which will be known as "The Pro Bowl Games."

"We think there's a real opportunity to do something wholly different here and move away from the traditional tackle football game," NFL executive Peter O’Reilly told Maaddi. "We decided the goal is to celebrate 88 of the biggest stars in the NFL in a really positive, fun, yet competitive way."

Peyton Manning will have a significant role in the new format, coaching the flag football game while providing perspective on activities. His Omaha Productions company will also help shape programming and promote the events.

I think that giving up the game no one cares about is fine, but flag football? Thats just stupid. I care even less about a flag football game, and players could still get hurt.

They should just learn from the XFL stuff and do more eye candy. How about a bikini league game coached by the Pro-Bowl players?

As professional athlete, I’d probably prefer they just name the names and skip all the potential injury activities….

You wouldn't tune in for this "Pro Bowl" game? I mean, not even for a quarter? I like my idea better.

You should also check out female underwater hockey and rugby (just discovered it myself), and of course female handball on sand. Lots of good entertainment ideas from these sports as well. For those that would prefer to see men then there are male versions of these sports.

This is the practice run for what is coming to the NFL soon. I would say within the next decade.

So when will these games happen? Hopefully after the SB so everyone can participate like the old days.

About time. Just fuel the players up on alcohol and other substances and have a reality show. Probowl was a complete joke other than betting the over.

Ok...I'm going to say that the bikini football game is stupid too. In this age of internet porn, you can find pretty much whatever you are looking for 24/7.

I agree the pro bowl game is dumb. The flag football game is dumb...but so is bikini leauge football. If this spontaneously broke out at my local park, of course I'd watch, but Watching some 6's and 7's wear cheap swimsuits and bike helmets play football...not high on the list of stuff I'd search for on X hamster. That leauge didn't last because it's not 1985 and the internet exists. This died the same death the SI swimsuit edition did.

I watch football because it's an awesome, violent, strategic and dramatic sport. I have X hamster for pretty much anything involving women and rediculuousness that I could ever want. I also, have a lovely wife whose company I can enjoy whenever.

Skills competition sounds fun. I liked the old battle of the quarterbacks......bring that back.

I read this and it's bizarre the last pro bowl played may have been last year with no announcement. I will say I always enjoyed the skills competitions. Drew Brees and Jake Plummer crushed a lot of those passing challenges.

                      No one watched it anyway.
and they ruined it for the players when they moved it out of Hawaii. Before you got a family vacation and everyone was all happy to be there. Lately it turned into being more like an obligation.

Good, no one cared about the pro bowl. First and foremost the players. No one tried, most of the marquee players opted out. It was a shit show from every angle. Something needed to change, let's see if this is better.

I remember when the Pro Bowl was a big deal in the 80s and early 90s. Then the NFL kept messing around with the success. Back in the day, true fans bought their favorite player's Pro Bowl jersey.

I liked the QB challenge because it happened before the season when I was jonesing for some football. HOFers like Elway, Peyton, Brady, and Favre competed in several challenges and never won. Scrubs like Dilfer, Delhomme, and Chris Simms would win. Jake Plummer won it twice.

That was a lot of words to try to rationalize my joke. But, the joke is also two edged about turning the pro bowl into powder puff. No one cares...

I'm so old, I remember the college all-star game against the defending NFL champs. I still remember Louis Wright making a big impact in that game and being so excited about him joining the Broncos.
