  • Perspective on Peyton Mannings "slow start"

This is a recurring theme among Bronco fans and media as a way to try and reconcile the dreadful beginning of the Hackett/Wilson era.

It's true that Manning started out 2-3 in his first 5 Bronco games, but he did NOT start off his tenure as 10 POINT FAVORITES his first 2 games like Wilson and Hackett have. Let's examine this a little more closely.

Denver won Mannings debut at home VS Pittsburg. That Steelers squad finished 8-8 and missed the playoffs.

Denver then lost @Atlanta on Monday night in week 2. That Falcons team went 13-3. Denver lost by 6.

Denver then lost at home in week 3 to the Texans. The Texans that year, went 12-4. Denver lost by 6.

In week 4, Denver absolutely destroyed a Raiders team that went on to finish 4-12.

And finally, in week 5 Denver lost @ New England to Tom Brady and a Patriots team that would finish 12-4.

LOL. Mannings 3 losses were to division winning teams while he was getting into the grove after a neck injury and playing in a new system with new teammate!!!!

This NOT AT ALL the same as this woeful display of incompetence against two teams vying for the no.1 overall draft pick. Manning SHREDDED the 2 mediocre squads he encountred in his first 5 starts.

What you all are seeing with this Coach and QB is not comparable to Mannings tenure in Denver.

It's lazy to say it's the same.

Manning would change Hacketts calls, would never let the HAC K neuter him.

Manning started with a brutal schedule in 2012. He would’ve destroyed these 2 clown show teams they just played

Ok. What metric would you prefer to use to demonstrate the crapiness of the Seahawks and Texans? Or are you saying the Texans and Seahawks are good squads?

That's all subjective crap. It's a pro football game and they're tough to win. My point is that the point spread has nothing to do with who will actually f****** win the game.

Manning had like 3 picks in the first quarter vs the falcons. He looked old and weak at the start of his bronco career. Throwing ducks over the middle that were easily picked off.

Took until the second half of the chargers game (week 6) for manning and the rest of the team to get it going

I'm sorry. I guess the Seahawks and Texans are Super Bowl contenders this year. My bad.

It was a struggle, for sure.

What I’m sure wasn’t happening was delay of game calls, plays not getting into the game, no punt returner on the field for a kick, using TO because you’re about to get 2 more delay of game calls..

Wilson’s start has been not without its challenges, but the team overall, particularly the game readiness… ooofff… not good

I distinctly remember everyone talking about the arm being shot until the Chargers comeback.

We also didn’t give up a haul of picks to get him. Nor did we give a massive contract before his first game.

The 2012 Broncos was way more talented. Denver struggled in 2012 to start because they used a freaking FB. The defense, WR and OL had a lot more talent. I know Fox gets a lot of shit but at least they could get the players in position with plays call(well it was probably PM).

On a side note another stupid thing a coach did with Manning was 2015 Kubiak made Peyton change his cadence to what he wanted vs what Peyton used his whole career.

Young DT was better than any of the WRs we currently have

Plus we signed guys manning already had a connection with like stokely and Tamme

The Denver WR are pretty bad outside of thr main 2 guys. JJ is a China Doll and think how lucky Denver got that Sutton's foot wasn't down on the ground when Singletary took his legs out.

No doubt veteran coach John Fox had the broncos playing more disciplined football. This team has rookie coaches everywhere. And it’s showing.

with competent coaching were easily 2-0
So far it’s been a nightmare for Hackett. Even though I’m loving the run game he’s installed. when he actually uses it that is

For sure. They went “all in” and there is long term risk there. Still, Russ is far down my list of concerns. Hackett might be a blackout drunk and blind airline pilot trying to land this thing, that’s problems 1-10 at the moment.

We traded 2 first round picks to get him. We had no choice but to extend Wilson. Plus It’s not that bad of a contract imo

At least we also got rid of Fant and lock. Two disaster players who were a waste of a draft pick. See. Odds are we screw up the draft anyway

How interesting. You take the interpretation that makes Denver the worst team it can be. Such a surprise.

The actual similarity in the two situations is that a QB, coach, and team implementing new everything is likely to improve substantially after the first few games. How much this team will improve remains to be seen.

Zero, this post is valid. This is like watching newlyweds trying to figure out how to be married. Lots of potential, but its really a bit of a mess right now. I think that what we'll see is this group getting more cohesive after they put together a couple quality wins.

Not gonna lie - this next game is pretty critical for the Broncos. If they can pull out a win against a quality team like the 49ers, they will have some good momentum going into the divisional games in the next several weeks. If we get thumped at home, its time for concern.

A team in "disarray" is a fair assessment, but this team has shown bits and pieces of what it can become. I said it would take four games to understand "who we are," and I'll stand by that. Here comes game 3, let's see how this group can learn and grow. Even if we can squeak out 2 "ugly" wins in the next couple weeks, I think it will be a great sign of progress. I assume that we will get "hot" as the season rolls on, but its important not to fall too far behind while chasing a wildcard spot (which is still my expectation at this point). This team should be fighting out the final wildcard spot in game 17.
