  • RIP to Marlin Briscoe. 1st starting Black QB in the AFL

Broncos Country recently lost a guy that deserves to be remembered.

The first Starting Black QB of the SB era.
    Marlin "The Magician" Briscoe.
He went on to win two SBs with other teams as a WR. He was a QB in college, but drafted as a WR. Then the QB Tensi went down, and Briscoe took over the rest of the year.

May he, who broke the glass ceiling so long ago, rest in peace.

(Sorry for the typo in the title, didn't catch that until it was too late. Mods if you could fix the man's name so it is spelled properly, I'd be much abliged.)

Just read this. Broke some rookie passing records in Denver. Tensi was awful so I bet it wasn't just cause he went down. RIP Marlin

Way before my time, but RIP. I’m a huge fan of trailblazers and mold-breakers.

I vaguely remember the year. Steve Tensi suffered a broken collarbone that basically ended his season in September. Briscoe was just a rookie and hadn't really been drafted as a QB, even though that was his college position. He had some early success as a scrambler (almost a necessity, given our O-line back then.) He wasn't terribly accurate, but tended to make more than his share of big plays. OTOH, he threw plenty of INTs. I always wondered how he might have developed with a little more experience, but he left Denver when they named Pete Liske as the starter. I don't think he ever played QB again, but he found great success as a WR with the Bills and Fins.

Too bad he never got a shot to develop. His highlights are a lot of fun.
