  • OT- Audio Nerds

Any audio nerds on the forum? I’m really into car audio systems, deeper into being able to design and fine tune them… just lack a lot of technical knowledge…

looking for some resources to learn- Google searches are fine, but hard to tell who is doing videos that know what they’re doing, and those who maybe do…

Car Audio is really a lost art in todays era. Back in the day you had to have the best aftermarket products sleekly installed into cars. Today new cars come with amazing systems already that keeps the cars interior stock unless you need to go bigger louder faster.

Yeah, I gave up on aftermarket mostly a half decade or so ago... the effort, cost, and especially replacing modern cars' stereo system integrations no longer seemed worth it. Especially considering how much better factory stereos are now.

Will we even own cars in 5 years? Dolby Atmos in the home is where it's at.

Marine audio systems with huge amplifiers and multiple giant speakers mounted on the wakeboard towers is where the money is being spent. People spend 5 to 10k on their boat sound systems. Stereo wars, country music verses hip-hop and classic rock in the coves is getting out of control.

I have been in some higher end cars, and the sound systems are really pretty good…. I find most of them lack enough mid bass and especially low end that once you have had it, it’s hard to be without it… but you can add a sub to the pretty easily…

it’s like when heard a Mark Levinson int amp powering a pair of Martin Logan Classic ESL, the guy had it tuned to a specific listening position… you’re pretty much ruined because anything less just doesn’t seem to be enough…

Reasonably priced DSP for vehicles has kind of changed the game, and made car audio interesting again for me… the amount of control over the signal, and being able to correct for the unique surfaces/ speaker positions of any car is incredible… and they come with 16 output channels, that is a TON is imaging flexibility. Throw in O-scopes and reference Mics/ software now available to just about everyone, it’s a tweakers paradise..

Not sure why I'd encourage another bumping fool out on the road... Crutchfield. Save your money for a house. Then buy you a nice system. Car audio? Lol... you must be younger than 21.

Never been about big flowing bass, I have 1, 12” in a sealed enclosure I custom built…. Very tight and responsive low end…

I almost own my house our outright and have my retirement fully funded…. This is a hobby and general interest in acoustics and sound quality.

Standard system isn’t gonna donor justice… when the Flintstones themes comes on, you have to capture all that bandwidth!

As we all know, you can't really control bass in a car. Like 75% plus easily escapes. You can still upgrade the new rides, just makes it harder since they incorporate more functionality than music these days. What kind of hooptie you rolling in Dawg?

Good for you on securing your future. I recently got into home theater again right before Covid. I'm really into blasting Google music videos. It can be tricky to get good quality audio though. Until I can do the next upgrade to eARC, I'm finding best results with nVidia sheild.

My car audio phase ended with High School. I had a Chevy S10 extended cab with a big ass box for 2 12's. I think they were kickers. Lot of bass, lots of bass. Probably sounded like shit but it had a lot of bass.
